This is a beautiful old ship's oil lantern that came from a decommissioned ship in Japan. A piece that are extremely hard to come by in this large size, age and condition. It is a 'Not Under Command Light" and according to the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, "a vessel not under command shall exhibit two all-round red lights in a vertical line where they can best be seen".
This light was manufactured by Nippon Sento Co. Ltd. Made with brass, it has a thick lens and a red filter inside and was fueled with kerosene. Gorgeous aged patina. In great condition for it's age and an item that was once on the high seas.
